Design tribute to the BMW M1 celebrates its world premiere at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2008.

Munich/Cernobbio. To mark the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1 super sports car, BMW Group Design is presenting a homage to this legendary model as part of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2008. The BMW M1 designed by Giorgio Giugiaro was a car of superlatives and a highly emotive vehicle that was uncompromisingly primed for the race track. Spawning this development was the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, a revolutionary concept car which, in addition to its groundbreaking functional design, also boasted a raft of technical innovations. It is from these two unique vehicles that the BMW M1 Homage takes its cue - a design study that pays tribute to its forerunner models and an embodiment of the competence, creativity and potential of the BMW Group Design team.

BMW Z9 (2000 - 2003) : DINGOLFINGER

Its odd how the James Bond connection stays with some cars. The Aston Martin DB5, the Lotus Esprit and even cars like the Citroen 2CV all have the indelible stamp of 007 about them. To this list we can add the BMW Z8, a car manufactured at BMWs specialist Dingolfing factory and which featured in 1999s The World Is Not Enough. The car in the movie was a pre-production mock up which was just as well, as it got cut in half by a huge buzz saw.

When the first press pictures of BMWs 1-Series were issued, I have to admit that I absolutely hated it. I couldnt see how on earth BMW could sell a car that looked as if its sills had collapsed. After a while, however, I started to become a bit more accustomed to its unconventional proportions and when I first clapped eyes on one in the metal, I must admit that I was starting to appreciate the baby BMW.

Sometimes you have to wonder. I have a suspicion that senior executives at car manufacturers must occasionally write the names of types of cars on pieces of paper, fold em up, pop them in a hat and draw pairs out at random. Its possibly the only excuse for the Renault Avantime (coupe/people carrier), the Fiat Sedici (supermini/4x4) or the Citroën C3 Pluriel (convertible/you tell me).

When it comes to buttoned down rectitude, it takes a lot to beat BMW. Virtually everything it does is clinically researched, endlessly analysed and ruthlessly over-engineered. Every once in a while, however, the guard slips and the odd maverick vehicle flies the nest. The old BMW M Coupe was a case in point, a car created by a bunch of moonlighting enthusiasts that somehow saw the light of day.

BMW 6 Series Edition Sport : SIX SHARP

If a standard BMW 6-Series is a little too soft and an M6 a shade too expensive, try the 6-Series Edition Sport. Steve Walker reports.

The BMW M6 is powered by a 5.0-litre V10 engine with 507bhp. It develops 520Nm of torque and can hurl itself from a standstill to 62mph in 4.6 seconds.

Sounds good doesnt it? Well, the M6 coupe also costs around £85,000. That kind of capability doesnt come cheap but customers looking for a taster of the M6 feel in a less extreme package are catered for by BMWs 6-Series Edition Sport models.

BMW M5 Touring : A BUNCH OF FIVES

There is no quicker way of moving a chest of drawers overland than in BMWs M5 Touring. That more than justifies it in Andy Enrights book.

Its an undeniable fact. Performance estates are just that tiny bit cooler than their saloon or hatch counterparts. The reason? Theres something about them that indicates that the owner doesnt have to try too hard, that the whole business of going fast isnt being taken too seriously. While this isnt the first M5 Touring BMW has ever built, its the first theyve offered to British customers and goes straight to near the top of my personal cool wall.

Downsizing doesn't need to be boring, and BMW's 120d ES proves it. The smallest coupé in the BMW range underlines that premium coupé ownership can be had even in tough financial times. Benefiting from BMW's fuel saving EfficientDynamics the 120d ES Coupe returns a very wallet friendly 52.3mpg combined fuel consumption figure, while its CO2 emissions of 128g/km also means low tax if it's being bought with company money.

One rather curious decision with BMWs last generation M3 was Munichs decision to offer it here only in Coupe and Convertible bodystyles. The controversial lines seem to attract or repel in equal measure but underneath the scalpel sharp bodywork beats the heart of a sports car. After the disappointment that was the Z3, fans of the Munich marque are rejoicing.

Theres something enormously gratifying about disproportionate retaliation. Tell me you didnt get a little juiced when Zinedine Zidane floored Marco Materazzi after an innocuous insult or when Robin Cook gave Tony Blair both barrels upon his ministerial resignation. Research has shown that our brains are actually hard wired for it.

BMW 320d Coupe, Style with a conscience

The smooth, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine in the 320d Coupé is the same as that found in the saloon and Touring variants of the ubiquitous 3 Series, but the sleek two-door version seems the least likely to be green. It's difficult not to sound too swooning here, but the 320d Coupé has it all: style, pace, sharp dynamics, good fuel economy (near 60mpg) - and now even lower road tax.

The 320d will find itself in band D next year, making the jump from band C this year and saving £30 by 2010. Mark that as yet another victory for BMW's EfficientDynamics programme (along with the MINI Cooper D). With 139g/km of CO2, the Audi TT TDI is another winner in the sports coupé category with a £10 drop in VED on the cards, and while its performance is similar, it can't match the Beemer for practicality.

Ford Kuga, Ford for a BMW

BMW's X5 has been the SUV of choice for high earners for a while, the big BMW's blend of fine on-road dynamics and good looks being a big draw. Thing is, with your finances not perhaps quite as healthy as they once were the big sticker prices of the BMW are no longer quite so palatable. But what to replace it with? Ford's Kuga is perhaps the perfect answer.

Sure, the Kuga doesn't have the X5's prodigious grunt, but the engines on offer deliver enough performance and decent refinement. The Ford is also a real treat in the bends, with control to rival the BMW. And it looks great too, so it'll hold its own among the 4x4s parked outside your mate's chalet in Switzerland on your annual family ski trip - which you'll still be able to afford by opting for the Ford.

Next generation BMW 1 Series - Rendering

Huckfeldt, at Auto Bild and his BMW 135i SuperSports car rendering has inspired other auto publications as well. As much as the rendering has been criticized, several sources I have asked, confirmed that he is on the right track.
BMW will move away from the blend, boring look of its compact cars and will try something more adventurous with the new 1 Series. I know that many of us cannot imagine or accept a BMW to take this new shape, but….we’re moving forward and new car designs will emerge.

BMW Z Vision Concept - Z10 ED- Eco performance car

BMW Z Vision - a concept that we mentioned the first time back in December. The BMW Z Vision Concept or Z10 as Autocar names it, is a two-seat roadster with smaller proportions, but more modern or current styling of the Z8.
It is based on a compact -1 Series - platform, and it’s a showcase for Efficient Dynamics with an eDrive badge. As far as design, we learned in December that the headlights are positioned on the corner of each front wings with a wide twin-kidney grille similar to the CS Concept, but not as wide.

BMW 3 Series M Sport Package available to order in the U.S.

Thanks to Collin from BMW of Pleansat Grove, we inform you that the highly awaited M Sport Package is available to order on the BMW 3 Series. Collin has just placed an order for a 335i with the M Sport Pack which will be delivered in March.
Unfortunately, the pricing is blocked in the dealership’s ordering system, so no information on that at this point, but with the M Sport Package price on the 1 Series set at $1,300, we should expect the 3 Series package to be around the same amount.

2009 BMW Z4: Ordering Guide and Options

The ordering guide along with all the options available for the new 2009 BMW Z4, are available in the ordering system at BMW dealerships. We talked before about the exterior and interior colors available on the new Z4, but we didn’t have the full ordering guide for U.S.
As you might know by now, here in the U.S. the only two models available will be the Z4 sDrive30i and the Z4 sDrive35i.
As expected, all the whistles and bells are available to order and the new Z4 has a lot packages available

Spy Photos: BMW X5 M - in Munich

Changing scenery here, from South Carolina to Munich, Germany, the BMW X5 M has been spotted again. Two weeks ago, an X5 M in the final production evaluation phase (FEP) was spotted near Spartanburg, with very little camouflage and almost ready to be unveiled.
Today, our friends at GlobalMotors, have some new shots of the BMW X5 M being tested in Germany, again, with minimal camo covering the large air-intakes in the front bumper. We can see the X6 headlights style and we also know that the X5 M will feature the same fascia as its twin brother

BMW X5 Facelift - First Spy Shots

With the latest BMW X5 model being launched in 2007, the facelift version was destined to show up this year, with sales starting in 2010. The photos of the X5 facelift spotted by our friends at GlobalMotors, are showing us a slightly different version of the X5.
A quick glance at the X5 Facelift, tells me that the X5 will receive the front fascia from the X6, similar to the X5 M and its counterpart. The headlights seem also to be identical to the ones on the X6.

BMW 7 Series Hybrid out in the open

The new BMW 7 Series Hybrid has been spotted again somewhere in Munich. The 7er Hybrid which was unveiled at the L.A Auto Show in November uses a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that delivers 407 horsepower and 442lb ft, working in combination with an AC electric motor that can add another 20 horserpower and 155lb ft of torque.
In mild hybrid form, the result is 15 percent less fuel consumption and emissions (in the EU test cycle) versus a combustion engine only equivalent.

Incorrect Fueling Protection System as standard for all BMW diesel models

BMW is the first car manufacturer to equip all new diesel-powered models with an Incorrect Fueling Protection System as standard equipment. The innovative system helps prevent cases of misfueling at the pump and its far-reaching consequences. A special mechanism fitted to the filler neck prevents drivers from accidentally inserting the fuel filler nozzle of a standard unleaded gasoline pump into the filler neck of a diesel-powered car.
This technology has been tried-and-tested in a variety of BMW models with diesel engines and will now be fitted to all diesel-powered BMW models, including the 335d Sedan and X5 xDrive35d now on sale in the US, right from the factory.

Dinan New Signature Packages BMW M5, M6, 135 and 335i

Dinan is announcing a bevy of new high performance products and Signature Packages for the BMW M5, M6, 135 and 335i xDrive models. The new line of products includes high performance engine and driveline modifications as well as a 5.7 liter S85 engine for the M5 and M6 models which outputs an impressive 611hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. The engine is developed using the same technology found in Dinan’s high performance S62 Grand-Am Daytona Prototype race engines.
